Old Istanbul Street - Oil Painting
Story: While looking at some original photographs, but recreated purely in my own imagination, oil painting on canvas
38x48cm
Description: Before the 20th century, almost all houses were made of wood. Because there was a lot of forest. The interior was decorated with extremely elegant wood carvings. The cage in the windows was called Cumba(Exedra-Bay window.)
Each region had its own characteristics on these houses. There are buildings of great value that still stands in our time. The reason wood was used, because Turkey has lot of earthquakes, these wooden buildings was resistant to earthquakes yet they were a fire hazard. The food cooked in the wood fire in the garden or in the kitchens was delicious. But a spark sparked easily, and the fire that spread throughout the neighborhood also caused great disasters. Istanbul fires have been the fires that have made a big impression in our history. In this painting, I worked from my own imagination by stylizing a street in Istanbul.
